DOGS & EQUIPMENT:
On the day of the race dogs should be a minimum 12 months to do canicross, and a minimum 18 months to do bikejor

Dogs must be kept on the lead at all times during the race and should not be run in a slip lead; check/ choke chain; head collar; flexi/ extendable lead or any other collar that restricts breathing.

For your dog’s comfort they should be run in a suitable harness that doesn’t restrict their movement, and be attached to their handler by a line containing some bungee to act as a shock absorber.

For canicross these lines must not be longer than 2 metres when fully extended, and a waist belt is strongly recommended for handlers.

For bikejor these lines must not be longer than 2.5 metres when fully extended (measured from the stem of the bike). A suitable bikejor attachment/ adapter at the front (side attachments are not allowed). The handler must also wear a helmet, gloves and eye protection.

Whilst race organisers will make every effort to provide water on site, competitors are ultimately responsible for providing water for their dogs at all times

No pregnant or nursing bitches are allowed to compete.
Bitches in season are allowed to race, but handlers may be asked to start at the back of the class to avoid interference with other dogs.
It is the owners responsibility to notify the race organisers if they need to start after everyone else.
Dogs should not be brought to the event if they are coughing or have recently been in contact with infectious disease. It is the owners responsibility to ensure their dog is fit and health before racing, if in doubt consult your vet.

If a dog becomes unfit or refuses to advance for any reason, the competitor is not permitted to finish the race. They must remain where they are, and wait to be picked up by the event sweeper and advise a marshal as soon as possible if the dog is in need of urgent attention.

It is recommended that competitors who have dogs who are worried by other canines should allow plenty of space for their dogs, especially at the start of the race, to alleviate any undue stress. Also please select the ‘Yellow Class’ option at checkout so that we can assist as best we can.

BORROWED DOGS
It is presumed that you are running with you dog.
If you must borrow a dog to race with you should be familiar with each other, have trained together prior to the race, and the handler should be aware of the dogs behaviour in a race environment and be responsible for its care throughout the event.
You will not be permitted to race with a borrowed dog that you have only just met.

CHILDREN
Runners aged 7-10 must be accompanied by an adult attached to the dog, on foot (no bikes).
All children attending the event to run or spectate must be supervised by an adult at all times and instructed not to approach dogs they do not know.

COMPETITORS
Must do their utmost to ensure that their dogs do not interfere with other runners/ bikes or dogs.
Abuse of dogs, both physical and verbal is prohibited. If a handler, in the opinion of the Race Marshal abuses a dog, that person will be disqualified.

Please can you generally keep to the LEFT of a trail, especially if having to walk, this will then allow any faster competitors to pass on the right hand side.
When overtaking, the advancing competitor must shout “Trail Right” or “Passing Right” to warn the competitor in front of their intentions.
The competitor who is being overtaken must assume responsibility to ensure that their dogs are to one side of the track and do not interfere with the runner going past on the side they have stated.

Everyone should show their fellow competitors and their dogs respect at all times and should not use the misfortune of another to unfairly gain an advantage. Additionally, if a competitor or a dog is in distress EVERYONE has a duty to assist if reasonably and safely able to do so.

SAFETY
Please listen to the race briefing and marshals instructions. PLEASE DO NOT BRING THEM to the race briefing so that everyone can clearly hear safety instructions.

Human and Canine first aiders are available, please ask if you or your dog are in need of assistance.

If required the organiser will adjust the distance according to weather conditions on the day. If changes are required then the organiser will inform the competitors 20 minutes before the start of the race, and notify these provisions on the ranking sheets.

The use of personal stereos, MP3 players or any electronic device with headphones etc. that impairs the ability to hear marshals or other runners is strictly forbidden. Anyone using such a device will be asked to refrain immediately or be disqualified.

INSURANCE
The race will be covered by event/public liability insurance but all racers and spectators attend the event and run at their own risk. Our insurance does not cover personal injury to competitors, we suggest suitable personal insurance for canicross is taken out.
Highland Canicrossers is not liable for any loss or damage suffered by or caused to a competitor, their property or their dogs

CANCELLATION
Should the race have to be cancelled or postponed for reason beyond the organisers control or in the event of bad weather, making the course too dangerous to run on, the organisers reserve the right to take expenses already incurred from entry fees before using any remaining moneys to refund entrants.
To claim a refund, competitor(s) should send a self addressed and stamped envelope to the organiser within a month of the event date.
NOTE it is the entrants responsibility to check that the race is still on before travelling, the organisers will post on Facebook and email all entrants if there are any last minute changes – please check your email before travelling.

In the case where the competitor needs to withdraw the following applies:
1 month + prior Race date: Full Refund
Up to 4 weeks prior: 50% Refund
1 week prior: 25% Refund
