April is oral cancer awareness month. White and Burgundy are the colors we use to represent and acknowledge it!
According to research from the American Cancer Society, over 50,000 people across the United States will be newly diagnosed with some form of oral and pharyngeal cancer this year, adding to the nearly 400,000 Americans currently living with an oral cancer diagnosis. Tragically, of those affected with pharyngeal, tongue, or mouth cancer, it is estimated that 11,000 will not survive their diagnosis in 2020. This spring, the Student National Dental Association at the University of New England will strive to make a difference in these statistics and celebrate the people who have fought oral cancer by providing public awareness and free oral cancer screenings during the UNE SNDA Oral Cancer 5k in Portland, Maine.
