There is no other race like it in the world!

 

This unique course Starts & Finishes at Save the Chimps – the world’s largest privately funded chimpanzee sanctuary, located in Fort Pierce, Florida. Enjoy hearing the wonderful sounds of pant hoots and watching the chimpanzees roam as you run beside their island homes. Out of consideration for our sanctuary residents, registration is limited. Register early!

Over 2,400 participants joined us over the last five years, raising over $200,000 to benefit the retired chimpanzees residing at Save the Chimps. Thank you to everyone who made our 5th Annual Chimpathon 16k a success! Let’s make this year even better!

Event details and schedule

Race Central

The race will start & finish at Save the Chimps, race day packet pick-up will start at 5:30 and the 10K will start at 7:00, the 5K at 7:05 and the fun walk at 8:00. Parking will be at Save the Chimps and will open at 5:15. Runners will start going south on header canal road to the turn around and come back to the sanctuary for your finishing lap listening to the pant-hoots of the chimps! After completion you will receive a finisher medal and there will be hydration & post race snacks waiting for you!

 

Race Swag

Every registrant will receive a Chimpathon t-shirt, and a goodie bag filled with an assortment of donated giveaways. Each finisher will receive a collectible Chimpathon medal. Awards will be given to the top 3 overall male & female finishers along with the top 3 male & female winners of each age group!

 

Timing

This race will be timed live with disposable IPICO timing chips! These chips will be affixed to the back of your race bibs to record your race time! Please fasten your bibs to the front of your shirt or shorts where it is clearly visible. If your bib is not visible you will not be allowed entry into the sanctuary.

All participants will have a personal results page & finish line video! Preliminary results kiosks will be provided at the race for you to check your time after you finish!

 

The Sanctuary

During the lap through Save the Chimps, racers must:

• Stay on the marked course at all times
• Continue walking or running
• Refrain from making loud noises
• Follow any instructions given by sanctuary staff or Chimpathon volunteers
• Racers will not be permitted to come into contact with any chimpanzee or to get close to any enclosure, fence, or gate.

The sanctuary is in a rural setting; wildlife, including alligators and venomous reptiles may be encountered on sanctuary grounds. Wildlife may not be approached, handled, or fed.

Golf carts and other motorized vehicles are used by caregivers on sanctuary grounds. Although every effort will be made to limit the use of vehicles during the race, we ask that race participants keep to the right side of the road while in the sanctuary.

For your safety and for the well-being of our chimpanzees, racers may be denied access to any portion of the sanctuary or asked to leave the sanctuary for any reason.

 

Restrictions

Strollers, roller skates, roller blades, skateboards, scooters, baby joggers, and bicycles are not allowed on the course during Chimpathon due to uneven terrain. We ask that racers not wear earphones or anything that would interfere with their ability to hear while running/walking through Save the Chimps. Only participants 16 & over can run in this race. For safety reasons, no animals can be allowed on the race course or in the Save the Chimps sanctuary, including service animals.

 

Contingency Plan/Event Cancellation

In the event unusual conditions necessitate the curtailment, postponement or cancellation of the event for the safety of participants, the Race Director shall have absolute authority to make changes in order to best serve the interests and safety of the participants of the event. In case of extreme weather, the race director shall determine if and when the event shall cease, resume or be cancelled.

No refunds will be issued if the event is cancelled.

 

The Virtual Race

Can’t make it to the sanctuary? You can still support the chimpanzees in our care by running or walking in a location that is convenient to you. The virtual race is on the ‘honor system.’ You can do it on your treadmill or in a park – wherever you would be most inspired. You don’t even have to complete the 10K all at one time! We would be delighted if you shared photos about your route. You can even post on Facebook and tag us so others can learn about Save the Chimps. You will receive the race shirt, racer’s bag full of fun freebies from Save the Chimps and sponsors, and the finisher’s medal. Items will be shipped after the live event.
