Welcome to the 36th Anniversary of the Sportspectrum Firecracker 5k Race for Research Run & Healthwalk. This coming July 4th, our Nation’s Birthday promises to be celebrated with a special passion and purpose by Americans from coast to coast. The 35th running also brings a special milestone to myself and this great run. The year was 1985, Springlake Point Apartments, and about 45 weekend warriors took the streets of Springlake to run the first Annual Firecracker. Scott Smith was our first overall male with a time of 15:37 and Terry Davis won the ladies crown in 19:00 flat. It has been a great ride and a lot of fun sharing my July 4th with all my favorite friends. Special thanks to my family who does not know a holiday without a run! Thanks to Lamar and Peggy, who watch each year from above. Thank you Woody who makes the morning come alive with patriotic music. Thanks to Ann and Weldon, Clark, Matt, Jeff, Mike, David, and John! And thank you Charlotte for the 30 fun filled Firecracker memories we have shared together.
Thanks so much to our Title Sponsor, Spine Institute of Louisiana Foundation. 80% of Americans experience back pain or spine disease. It is one of the most debilitating health problems that we face. The Spine Institute of Louisiana Foundation is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization whose mission is to improve current spine treatments and develop new ones through innovative research. Thousands of patients in the Ark-La-Tex have directly benefited as a result of the research that is done through the Foundation. The Spine Institute of Louisiana has received International recognition from the research performed at its research Foundation. Donations directly benefit spine research at the Spine Institute of Louisiana Foundation.
This race is also being run in the memory of three great friends. Ran Kiper, Jim Wilhite, & Robin Fell. They all had a passion for the great outdoors, from a Saturday morning jog with “the group” to a competitive half-marathon down on the Riverfront. They were all leaders, giving their time and resources to organizations and individuals in need. They loved their families and friends, and were committed to living life to its fullest —I miss you guys!!
The 1996 Firecracker 5K was Ran Kiper’s last foot race. The following day he was diagnosed with cancer and passed away that September. Men’s mug #101 is in memory of Ran Kiper.

Below are changes to this year's Firecracker 5k due to COVID-19. Please read them over, so that you have a clear understanding of what to except on race day.
Start: This year’s race will start in waves. The first two waves will be those that are competing for a commemorative mug and prize money. The first wave will be males that can finish the course in under 26:00 minutes. The second wave will be the females that can finish the course in under 32:00 minutes. Only the participants in the first two waves will have a timing chip attached to their bib number and they are the only runners that will have a recorded time on the website.
After the first two waves we will start those that are just out to have a good time. Waves will go off every 60 seconds. This should help spread the field out on the course. There will be approximately 7 wave starts (depending on the number of participants). Your race number color will coincide with your starting corral color. To make this race runs smooth and efficient please stay in your color corral. This will help keep the field of runners spread out on the course. If you want to run with a family member or friend that has a slower time, you can move to down to a slower corral, but you cannot move up to a faster corral.
Before and after the race: While waiting for the race to start and after you finish the race we recommend that you wear a face mask and practice social distancing.
Please practice good hygiene, Avoid touching your face, Sneeze and cough into tissue, elbow or mask, Maintain physical distance from non-household contacts, Sick individuals should stay home, isolate from household contacts, and contact medical providers, When you return home, wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
Port-a-lets: Port-a-lets will be separated 20’ apart from each other. Hand sanitizer will be accessible outside each port-a-let.
We will have numerous sanitizing stations available throughout the venue.
Water stop: There will be no water stop on the course or before the race. Participants are urged to bring their own fluid replacement.
Out on the course: We are recommending that while you are out on the course that you practice social distancing and try not to come in contact with other runners.
Awards: Checks will be mailed to the top 2 overall male/ female finishers. That way the winners do not have to hang around until everyone is done.
The top overall 120 male and 100 female runners will be awarded “The Mug” after you cross the finish line.
Post Party: There will be No Post Party this year. Each participant will receive a bag at the To-Go Bags table that will have bottled water, bottled Gatorade and a covered fruit. We ask everyone not to stick around and socialize, but to grab your goody bag and head home or head to Twisted Root for your free beer or milkshake – good thru July 11, 2020.
We want our running/ walking community to have a good time, but it is extremely important that people remain cognizant of what is going on. Keep practicing social distancing measures that you have been using the past couple months. We want to demonstrate that some events can begin to happen if they are done the right way!
