Rocket City Marathon

Saturday December 12th, 2020

Huntsville, AL

Official Website

Description

The original description for the 2020 Rocket City Marathon follows this introduction. Unfortunately, as so many have experienced this year, the impact of COVID-19 on our daily lives has been far reaching, and our race is no exception. We have decided, for the sake of all involved - participants, volunteers, vendors, support personnel - to switch to a virtual only race for 2020.

Each participant will have to run their individual marathon or half-marathon during the month of December. You are free to run anywhere and anytime that is safe and legal. Just remember, once you start your clock, you can't stop it for any reason until you're done. Although you are more than welcome to try again before the month is over. We just need your final results by December 31.

Registration will close on November 1, and each participant will receive an image of our iconic rocket prior to December 1. We ask that you send us a picture of you and the rocket at your own personal finish line. Feel free to send additional photos of you and the rocket along your chosen course. We'll compile the results and during the month of January, 2021, we will send out your finisher medal and finisher gift.

One final note. The Rocket City Marathon has had a strict 6 hour time limit, and Half the Rocket City Marathon has had a strict 4 hour time limit, but being virtual this year will allow us to eliminate time limits altogether. If you've ever wanted to officially finish the Rocket City Marathon (or Half), but felt like 6 hours (or 4) was too fast, this is your year. You can take as long as you like, provided your clock keeps running and you finish before December 31.

We leave the following as a reminder of what we hope will return in 2021:

Come run the Rocket City Marathon in Huntsville, Alabama. For over 40 years the Rocket City Marathon has been a premiere marathon event in the South. The Rocket City Marathon is conducted by the Huntsville Track Club.

The Rocket City Marathon is more than just a race. It is an “event” built around the race. We work just as hard creating exciting activities to make your trip to the Rocket City fun as we do conducting a flawless race. If you have run the Rocket City Marathon in the past you know what a quality event this is. Despite COVID 19 shaking up our entire world, the plan is for the 2020 Rocket City Marathon to be the same excellent event it's always been.

If you aren't ready to run the full marathon, join us for Half the Marathon, sponsored by David Hall of Southern Marketing Associates. At 9am registered participants will merge onto the marathon course and run the back half the course. They will run out to the Space and Rocket Center and Botanical Gardens with the marathoners before returning to the same exciting finish line inside the VBC. There will be very limited entries available starting September 1st at NOON!

Or, maybe you'd rather gather a friend (or a few of them) and run a RELAY! In 2019, we added the option to run the full marathon as a team with up to five members. Relay teams will receive one finish time for the full distance. Teams will NOT compete based on finish times. Registration opens on July 1st.

Join us the Friday afternoon before the race for traditional Historic Huntsville Group Runs--free for the whole family.

Speaking of the family, we also have a Kids Marathon! Kids will log 25.2 miles leading up to race day and then have a grand finish running their FINAL MILE on Friday evening. On-site child care is provided on Saturday from 6am until 2pm by KidTowne Inc.

And be sure to purchase tickets to Friday night's Pre-Race Dinner held at the Huntsville Museum of Art. There are food options for all types of diets; it's not just a "carb dinner" anymore. These and the other Friday activities are provided to encourage you to run your best.

After the race is over, while runners are enjoying the post race food, families can enjoy concessions offered in the South Hall. Be sure to stay for the awards ceremonies to be eligible for some excellent door prizes! Then spend a night out on the town, taking advantage of all Huntsville has to offer!

Race Day Temperatures:
Normal low temperature is 34 and normal high is 54.
