Step back in time along the legendary Route 66 and discover a hidden giant of America’s industrial past. Once rivaling the steel powerhouse of Pittsburgh, Joliet Iron Works stood at the forefront of industry when Route 66 was first paved a century ago. Now, in celebration of Route 66’s centennial, you’re invited to explore Joliet Iron Works’ impressive stone foundations on a self-guided tour and experience the legacy that helped shape the nation.
Along the way, Forest Preserve staff will bring the site’s history to life, sharing stories of the people who lived, worked and traveled this iconic corridor. Experience history in action with a live blacksmith demonstration, where raw metal is transformed into everyday tools. Be sure to stop by the preserve shelter to view historic photographs of the iron works and imagine the site in its prime.
Stay for a moment or for the entire time — this event invites you to explore at your own pace. Paved walkways are accessible on this 1-mile tour. Parking is limited, so consider walking, biking or carpooling to make the most of your visit.
