The Smallville 5K offers one of the world's most unique racing experiences, taking place 650 feet below the earth's surface in an active salt mine. This superhero-themed underground adventure combines fitness with the extraordinary experience of running through subterranean tunnels where darkness and adventure create an unforgettable challenge.
Underground Course Experience
Racing 650 feet underground in the STRATACA salt mine creates conditions unlike any other 5K. The cross-country style course winds through active mining tunnels where helmet-mounted headlamps illuminate the path ahead. Runners experience total darkness beyond their light sources, creating an otherworldly racing environment that tests both physical and mental endurance.
Superhero Theme & Costume Tradition
Embrace your inner superhero with creative costumes encouraged throughout the event. Part of the larger Smallville Festival when Hutchinson officially changes its name to Smallville, Kansas to celebrate its Superman connection, participants channel comic book heroes while navigating the underground course.
Safety Requirements & Logistics
All participants must wear helmets (bike helmets recommended, provided if needed) and headlamps for safety in the underground environment. The race operates in heats limited to 30 participants each due to underground logistics. Participants may run or walk, with self-timing using start and finish line clocks.
Age Requirements & Restrictions
Minimum age 8 years, with participants ages 8-18 requiring adult accompaniment. The underground environment and safety requirements make this event suitable for adventurous participants seeking unique experiences rather than traditional road racing.

Registration & Practical Details
Registration costs $35 with heats filling quickly due to the 30-person limit per underground session. Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled heat time. All participants still on course at 1 PM will be transported to the finish line, ensuring everyone completes this underground adventure safely.
