Description

A SELF-SUPPORTED, SELF-DIRECTED ~50K ULTRAMARATHON TO SUPPORT POPCORN PARK'S SHELTER DOGS.

Do marathons feel like a warm up?  Do water stations on sterile race courses make you feel soft?  Have you ever wanted to help a shelter dog--or ALL THE SHELTER DOGS!--but could not decide how?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, you might be an Ultra Dog.

The first annual New Jersey Ultra Dog is a self-supported ~50K run from the Delaware River (Bordentown Beach) to AHS Popcorn Park.  All proceeds will benefit the shelter dogs of AHS Popcorn Park, and the top finisher (1st place overall) will receive a $250 cash price.  This ultramarathon has only three rules:

    1. A group start is held at 6:00 AM at Bordentown Beach Park, Bordentown, NJ.  You must touch the Delaware River to start--dip a finger, toe, anything!

    2. You must complete the entire race on your feet.  No rollerblades, bicycles, cars, horses, etc.

    3. Finish is at AHS's Popcorn Park animal refuge, located at 1 Humane Way, Forked River, NJ 08731.  There will be refreshments available for all finishers between 12:00 PM and 1:30 PM in the Popcorn Park parking lot.

If you read carefully, you realized that there is no set route for this ultramarathon.  Start at Bordentown Beach.  Finish at Popcorn Park.  You pick how you get there.  And no water stations, orange slices, "gu" packets, or other luxuries will be provided.  You're an ultra dog--just get to the finish.

A few other details:

  • This ultramarathon will run whether one or one hundred participants register.  Self-supported ultramarathons are not for everyone, but the NJ running community is amazing and we hope to have a strong showing for the shelter dogs.

  • Following the start in Bordentown, you'll have the open road in view for the entire run.  No matter how you decide to get to Popcorn Park--yes, "self-directed" means you can take any *legal* route you'd like--you'll be straddling the shoulder of rambling backroads through farmland and the pinelands.  Runner safety is our top priority, so please face traffic, be alert, and do not take any risks. This is not a race where one minute, or even ten minutes, is likely going to decide a winner.

  • Given the rural nature of all possible routes, you should wear appropriate reflective clothing and consider other safety measures like headlamps, LED blinking lights, and/or safety vests.

  • Although this is the first year for the NJ Ultra Dog, the race organizers are the same folks who organized eight successful "Run the Pines for Canines 5K" events in support of AHS Popcorn Park.  It wasn't just that we thought "ya know, it'd be great to do a race ten times the 5K distance!"--instead, the unpredictable nature of the COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancellation at least two editions of the 5K, so the change to the 50K (and no post-race "party") format will allow us to continue to support the dogs without being at the pandemic's mercy.

Thank you for considering joining this new ultramarathon for NJ's shelter dogs.  Should you have any questions, reach out to Justin at (732) 814-2540.
