Porch to Torch 5K

Saturday August 7th, 2021

Gainesville, GA

Official Website

Description

The front porch has long been recognized as representing the ideals of family, community, and hospitality; a place where neighborhoods and communities gather, stories are told, and dreams imagined. In 1996 our community opened our front porch hospitality to the world for the Olympic Games. Now, 25 years later, you are invited to step off your porch and onto those same roads that welcomed the Olympic flame in 1996.

Celebrate 25 years of Olympic legacy by running or walking much of the same path the official Olympic torch traversed through Gainesville in 1996. Starting at City Park and traveling through the street surrounding Brenau University (with a visit through the Northeast Georgia History Center). Both 5k and 1-mile course options are available. This out and back course will have a water station that can be visited at roughly the 1-mile and 2-mile marks.

All participants receive a commemorative t-shirt, a chip-timed race, and refreshments after the race. Packet pickup will take place on Thursday, August 5th at the Gainesville Civic Center, just up the hill from City Park. Hours will be 11 am to 1 pm and 4 pm to 6 pm. Packets will also be available race morning beginning at 7 am. T-shirt sizes are guaranteed to everyone who registers by July 23rd. The registration fee for children under 18 is only $20.

Spectators and participants are invited to take part in the Olympic Village during and after the race. Explore official 1996 Olympic memorabilia, take part in versions of Olympic games for the kiddos, interact with some of our partner organizations and enjoy treats from Kona Ice. The Olympic Village continues until 10 am.

Overall and age groups awards will be presented after the race starting at 9 am.
