Fire Break 50 Mile & 5 Mile FKT Challenge
Harbison State Forest - Columbia SC
May 14th 2022
Harbison State Forest is a unique location in Columbia, South Carolina. Over 2100 acres and more than 20 miles of trails make Harbison State Forest a great place to be in nature in an urban environment. It starts and ends in the same location allowing runners, hikers, and mountain bikers to experience all they would expect of being outdoors. Steep climbs, declines, a creek crossing are just some of the features this trail offers.
The history of the Forest dates back thousands of years. Catawba and Cherokee tribes frequently traversed the woodlands to reach an ancient fording location on the Broad River. In 1951 the South Carolina Forestry Commission purchased 2,135 acres of land on the Broad River from the Board of National Missions for the Freedmen of the Presbyterian Church. The Church stipulated that the land be named "Harbison Forest" in honor of a major benefactor In 1981, the Forestry Commission approved a master plan for the long-term development of the tract. The goal was to provide a public greenspace to serve as an educational environment promoting the value of the state's forests and encouraging the stewardship of all of our natural resources.

Elevation Gain per 5 Mile Loop - 260 Feet
The course consists of a 5 mile loop with 260 feet of climbing per loop. The trail is single track with minimal roots. We will have a series of directional arrows that will be placed at all intersections. Please follow all directional arrows to stay on course. In the event that you make a wrong turn please backtrack to your original spot of confusion.
There is one aid stations on course that will be located at the start/finish loop. The aid station will be fully stocked with tailwind, soda, water, cookies, salt, chips, and crackers. This is a cup less event so runners are required to carry a hydration bottle if they will need fluids during the race. We gladly accept aid station donations of food items that you like to see at races. Our staff is very busy with course marking, timing, packet pickup, and communication with runners, that it does make it hard to prepare some amazing tasty treats in-between laps so feel free to contribute a little slice of heaven if you can! Thank you
Personal Tent Set Up - Drop Bags
Athletes who are not camping are permitted to have a drop bag or personal tent near the aid station in the open field adjacent to the start/finish line loop outside of fireside hall. Even if it rains. Please be mindful to place your personal belongings off the course as to not impede the runners, the flow of traffic, or other race participants. The start and finish line loop will serve as the official drop bag area designation. When you are finished with your race please "pack in and pack out" making the host facility look better than you found it.
In an effort to be good stewards to mother nature we will not have any of the following items at ANY of our events. This is in an effort to reduce the carbon footprint being placed by endurance events throughout the world. Please have a cup or hydration bottle if you will need to consume water/nutrition during the event. Please bring your own fork/spoon for any post race meals. Please bring your own bags for items collected at the race.
