28th Annual Canes Cross Country Classic 5K & 1K

This year marks the 28th Annual Canes Cross Country Classic 5K & 1K. This is Manatee County's oldest foot race. The Canes Classic began as a fundraiser for the Manatee High School cross country team back in 1993. It continues to be our team's only fundraiser. The money we raise from this event funds our entire cross country season. What does that mean? We pay for our own meet entry fees which range from $100-200 per meet. We pay for transportation to our meets. If we cannot pay for entry fees or transportation, we cannot compete in the required meets during the season to be eligible to compete in the state series. We have not purchased new uniforms since 2009. We do like to purchase team items that make us look like a team each year, including team t-shirts, bags, water bottles, and socks. Again, for all these items that we purchase, we must raise all the money. At the end of the season, we like to award MVP, Coaches Award, Team Spirit, and Most Improved. These awards come out of the money we raise.

When you register for, donate to, and sponsor the Canes Cross Country Classic, you not only receive a very cool and unique event shirt and all the amenities of a top quality event, you support a team that is self funded. We are frugal with our expenditures and proud that we do raise all our own money to fund our season every year. This year we do face a unique and very difficult challenge with COVID-19.

Since we are not able to hold our event in the traditional way on Labor Day 2020, we do have a great back up plan.  It's not ideal but we hope you will enjoy what we are able to offer based on our limitations set by School District of Manatee County and Manatee County Government.  We will offer all participants who register for our 5K three options.  All three options include a unique and clever 2020 event shirt and a virtual race that is run on Labor Day morning.  All participants will submit proof of their 5K time and distance to:  [email protected] by no later than 12:00 p.m. (noon) EST on Labor Day, Monday, September 7, 2020.  These results will be scored in our usual way - female and male overall, masters, grand masters, senior grand masters, veteran grand masters, and our age groups that we use every year.  First place in all the overall categories plus first place in age groups (9 & under, 10-12, 13-15, 16-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80+) will be awarded.  The complete results will be posted on http://www.CanesClassic.com and also submitted to the Bradenton Runners Club for scoring in their 2020 racing series.

Proof of your run or walk must be in the form of a screen shot of your Strava, Garmin, or other GPS tracking software or a photo of your watch showing date and time (must be Labor Day before noon) and the distance, finish time, and pace of your run or walk.  If your activity is "public" on Strava, for example, you are welcome to email in the link to it and also join the Canes Classic Strava club.  However if your privacy settings prevent us seeing it then we cannot use that.

This is our only option to offer a quality, competitive event and be able to produce results.  We will mail out all shirts, bags, and awards after the results have been finalized.

2020 Canes Classic Virtual Options

In order to be included and scored in our 2020 results, please submit your 5K proof to [email protected] by no later than 12:00 p.m. (noon) EST on Labor Day, 9/7/2020.  Proof can be a screen shot or photo showing the Labor Day date and time (September 7, 2020 any time before noon), distance (5K), your finish time and pace. A link to your public Strava event is also acceptable.  Thank you.
