****IMPORTANT - In order to host the event, our utmost goal is to provide the safest possible race.  To that end, we have learned a great deal in these last few months from industry experts and have created a plan for a race in the COVID environment.  It is important to note that this plan may be amended and edited as the event date approaches and things may change.  Please refer to this document often as you plan for your race:  COVID RACE SAFETY PLAN 

The 6th Annual Ocean State Rhode Races in Narragansett, RI will be held on Sunday, October 25, 2020. Race weekend features a Marathon, Half Marathon and 5k Race.


We have received our final approvals for our 2020 Ocean State Rhode Race and the race is a “go” for October 25th.  It is important to understand that this will not be a race like you have experienced in the past, and it is important that you read through all of the documentation thoroughly.  Unlike past years, the participant does have a bit of a burden to ensure all protocols and safety procedures are followed.  We will do our best to keep you informed, but we know there is a great deal to communicate and we need all participants to understand what is expected from all of us.  We will operate this race under a basic premise: 

D – Density reduction (keeping runners apart, on the course, and before and after the event)

A – Athlete communication (all expectations for runner behavior and event rules are laid out in detail, and runners have to sign a participation agreement)

S – Self-Reliance (athletes need to bring their own face coverings, bring limited personal belongings, and are encouraged to use the bathroom at home)

H – Hygiene (cleaning policy on site, porta-pottie protocols, and a transaction-less event)

While this race is very different than what we have come to expect from a road race, we are still viewing this event as a Celebration of Wellness.  We are so excited to be able to get back to doing what we love; using our legs to move, our hearts to beat and breath in our lungs.

Now for the nitty-gritty of it all:

2020 OSRR Covid Safety and Protocol Plan

We are going to be very strict, on all of this. We know that this is not what you expect at a “normal” Rhode Race, but nothing is normal right now. We have worked the last 6 months on this plan, studying our industry partners, learning best practices and working with our local and state authorities.  We ask that you read every line and come prepared and informed.  Our ability to adhere to these protocols and execute a safe race will be the first steps in hosting future events and getting back to a somewhat “Normal” race event.  We thank you for your patience and understanding as we all work through these changes. 


We do understand that this race will not be for everyone.  If you do not wish to participate this year, for whatever reason, you have the following options:

Join us virtually and run your race on your own course but continue to be a part of this incredible Celebration of Wellness.
Defer or transfer to any Rhode Races event in the next two years.
Give your bib for a conditional refund, or transfer it to someone directly for a refund.

The cut off to defer, transfer or give up your bib is 10/15.

If you decide to run with us, it will be required that you agree to our Social Contract - that you have read our Covid Safety Plan and that you are “healthy.”  You will not be provided with a bib on check-in unless your registration reflects that you have agreed to this.

Other important information:


Because of the strict participant caps required by the State, we cannot allow for more participants in each event than is mandated to us. To that end, if an event is sold out, we cannot upgrade or downgrade your race distance to a different event.

It is important to note that if you are signed up for the full marathon and can’t complete the distance, and cut the course at the half marathon mark, you will be DQ’d.  We recommend giving up your bib this year if you do not feel ready.  


All participants MUST pick up their bib in advance. 

Friday, October 23rd from 5-7p at Rhode Runner in Providence

Saturday, October 24th from 12-4p at Narragansett Town Beach

Race Day bib pick up will be restricted to 100 people ONLY. It must be reserved in advance and it is PROHIBITIVELY expensive purposefully.  Most races have eliminated race day bib pick up, but because of the proximity to the race, and the unreliability of the USPS particularly so close to the election, we cannot mail bibs.  We do have 2 bib pick up times in advance of the race and you must make all attempts to pick up your bib or send someone to pick it up for you. A friend or family member can pick up your bib if you provide them with a note and a copy of your ID.  We will keep the note, but you can have the copy of your ID returned.

We understand that for some of you, it may be a hardship for you to pick up your bib in advance.  For that reason, we have built into our COVID plan some limited spots for race day bib pick up.  However, it is not up to us to determine the depth of hardship.  To that end, we have set the race day bib pick up add on fee prohibitively high to encourage you all to do everything you can to find an alternative.  Our goal is to not have ANY bib pick ups for the safest event, not to profit off of any hardships. 

If you absolutely have to pick up your bib on race day, please visit your RunSignUp.com/profile and select Manage My Registration next to the Ocean State Race.  Select the ADD ON menu item. You must bring proof of your selection to race day bib pick up.


We have created starting time assignments for all participants that are based on your expected finish time.  Please visit your RunSignUp.com/profile and update your expected finish time for proper wave assignments.  The goal is to minimize “passing” on the course so please be honest in your entry.

If you do not run in your assigned wave, you risk disqualification.

Because of the nature of the socially distanced start, the importance of the chip on your bib being captured by the starting mats is of the utmost concern.  It is a known issue when you start your watch while crossing over a timing mat, that this may impede the ability of the chip to be read by the scoring software.  PLEASE DO NOT START YOUR WATCH WHEN YOU CROSS TIMING MATS.  Your bib reading is more important than your watch time.  :) 


While most of the race can be very socially distant, the start and finish line are the biggest areas of concern and where we will be the strictest.  

Do not arrive at the start line until 10 minutes before your wave. Come prepared to race, do not plan on shedding clothes, stretching, etc.  
Stretch/warm up/hydrate/shed clothing at your car before approaching the start line.
You will line up with 4 people per row, with each row and column 6 ft apart from another.   We need everyone’s help with this.
You must wear a mask until you are socially distant from the nearest runner.  This may mean you have to wear a mask for the first mile or so.  
No spectators at the start.


We encourage you all to carry your own hydration/nutrition.  Water, Nuun and Clif Gels will be provided, but aid station locations will be minimized to reduce risk to volunteers and participants.

The marathon course is USATF certified and is a Boston Marathon Qualifier

The Ocean State Rhode Races Half is the final stop of the Rhode Race Series, a five-stop series of Rhode Island Half Marathons.

Please Note: Ocean State Rhode Races will be happening rain or shine. Because of the logistics of planning for a race of this size, we cannot offer refunds for any reason. In the event that weather is severe enough to create an unsafe environment for participants, organizers will cancel the event with no refunds issued.

Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?

There are no age restrictions but you must show your ID when picking up your bib.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

The race starts at the North Beach pavilion but free parking is available at the South and West parking lots as well as local streets throughout town.

Is my race registration transferrable?

Yes - you can transfer your bib, transfer your race entry to select other races in our portfolio within one year, or defer your entry to next year's race. Transfer and deferral requests must be received before October 15, 2020.  Please visit this link for steps to complete this procedure.

How do I check on my race registration?

Please visit RunSignup.com/profile to verify your race entry and make any changes - profile updates, registration updates, transfers, deferrals, etc.
